Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has expanded his cabinet six months after taking office, inducting five new ministers and state ministers while promoting one existing state minister to full ministerial rank.
The new cabinet members took their oaths on Friday evening, immediately after the swearing-in of President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who administered the oaths to the new appointees at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban.
Joining the cabinet as full ministers are Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, a former minister in the previous BNP administration and a member of the ruling party’s Standing Committee; Sa Ching Prue Jerry, the MP for Bandarban; and Andaleeve Rahman, chairman of the ruling alliance partner Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP).
M Rashiduzzaman Millat, previously the state minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism, was also sworn in after being promoted to full minister.
Meanwhile, Gaibandha-4 MP Mohammad Shamim Kaiser and Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir have joined the administration as state ministers. Kabir was appointed under the technocrat quota.
A senior Cabinet Division official confirmed that Dr Moyeen Khan will take charge of the Local Government Division, a portfolio that fell vacant after Mirza Fakhrul assumed the presidency.
Sa Ching Prue Jerry’s appointment as minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs was widely anticipated ahead of the ceremony. The post had remained vacant since 1 June following the resignation of Dipen Dewan, who was assigned the portfolio when the BNP government was formed on 12 February.
The official also confirmed that Rashiduzzaman Millat will retain his portfolio at the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry following his promotion. Afroza Khanam had previously overseen the ministry.
When Prime Minister Tarique Rahman formed his government on 17 February, the cabinet comprised 25 ministers and 24 state ministers, excluding the prime minister. In March, State Minister Kayser Kamal stepped down from his ministerial post to assume the role of deputy speaker.

The administration is further supported by 10 advisers to the prime minister, five holding the status of full ministers and five holding the status of state ministers.
