Robi Axiata PLC has completed its nationwide network modernisation programme with the final phase covering the Chattogram, Cumilla and Noakhali regions, the operator said.

The final phase involved the modernisation of more than 3,500 network sites across the three regions within 180 days, according to Robi. The work was completed with virtually no disruption to customers.

The announcement was made at a programme titled “Celebration of Robi’s 4G Network Modernisation in Chattogram” held at Radisson Blu Chattogram Bay View on Sunday.

Robi said the modernisation improved customers’ 4G experience in the three regions by up to 20 per cent on average, while the number of people receiving improved indoor 4G coverage increased by 10 per cent.

The company deployed advanced Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology as part of the upgrade, which it said strengthened signal quality and coverage.

The upgraded infrastructure also reduced energy consumption by up to 12 per cent, according to the telco, contributing to efforts to reduce carbon emissions and improve network sustainability.

Speaking at the event, BTRC Chairman retired Major General Md Emdad Ul Bari said completing network modernisation on such a large scale within a short period was a significant engineering achievement.

“Robi’s investment in improving connectivity will further strengthen Bangladesh’s telecommunications sector,” he said.

Chattogram Development Authority Chairman Belayet Hossain said modern digital infrastructure was particularly important for Chattogram as the country’s commercial gateway. “Ensuring modern digital infrastructure in this region will play an important supporting role in trade, industrialisation and smart city management,” he said.

Ziad Shatara, MD and CEO of Robi, said, “With the completion of network modernisation in the Chattogram region, we have successfully concluded our nationwide network transformation programme. This is not only a technological achievement but also an important milestone in ensuring the highest-quality digital experience for customers in Bangladesh.”

He added, “Following the successful modernisation of more than 4,800 sites in greater Dhaka, this achievement in the Chattogram region has taken our journey of network excellence to a new level.”

Robi’s recent greater Dhaka initiative delivered up to 125 per cent improvement in customer experience across various clusters, reduced call drops by 20 per cent, and improved indoor network experience by up to three times for nearly half of customers, the telecom operator said.
