President urges DU to join world’s leading universities

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday called for improving the quality of education at the University of Dhaka to elevate it to the ranks of the world’s leading universities.

He made the call when a delegation from the university, led by Vice-Chancellor ABM Obaidul Islam, paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban, President’s Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam told BSS.

The president said the University of Dhaka was not only the country’s premier institution of higher learning but also a centre of the nation’s politics, history, heritage and culture.

Emphasising the importance of strengthening democracy, the president said, “Democracy is a culture that develops gradually through regular practice. Free, fair and impartial elections are essential for this purpose.”

He said adequate space must be provided to the opposition and political rivals to make democracy effective, adding that this was the beauty of democracy.

During the meeting, the vice-chancellor congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on assuming office as president and briefed him on the university’s overall academic activities.

He also formally invited the president, as chancellor of the university, to attend its upcoming 54th convocation.

The president accepted the invitation and assured the delegation of his presence at the ceremony.

The president’s military secretary, secretary and press secretary, as well as the university’s pro-vice-chancellors and treasurer, were present at the meeting.
