A police officer was injured after being attacked by robbers while responding to a 999 emergency call in Chapainawabganj, officials said.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, 11 November, around 11:30 pm in Chapainawabganj’s Zumarpara, Jumarpur area of Sadar Upazila.
The injured officer has been identified as Nurul Islam, 47, Sub-Inspector (SI) and in-charge of the Amanura Investigation Centre.
He is currently receiving treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, though his condition is reported to be stable, according to Chapainawabganj Additional Superintendent of Police Wasim Firoz.
Police said the information came through the emergency number 999, reporting a robbery in progress with obstacles placed on the road. Acting on the call, SI Nurul Islam rode to the scene on a motorcycle and informed colleagues at a checkpoint before proceeding.
However, before the backup team could arrive, the robbers ambushed SI Nurul Islam. He sustained injuries to his hands and legs from sharp weapons, like machetes. The attackers, estimated to be 10 to 12 in number, fled the scene once additional police arrived.
Additional Superintendent Wasim Firoz confirmed that the officer was targeted alone and rushed to the hospital for immediate treatment. He added that police have launched operations to identify and apprehend those involved in the attack.
