Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee has said there is no scope for extortion on roads anywhere in the country, particularly in Lakshmipur.
He made the remark while responding to questions from journalists at Lakshmipur Circuit House around 11am on Friday.
Addressing the local issue of waterlogging, the minister announced plans for a new project in the greater Noakhali region involving the excavation of the Bhulua River and re‑excavation of the Rahmat Khali canal.
He said the initiative aims to relieve residents of long‑standing suffering caused by waterlogging.
The minister added that feasibility studies have been undertaken to address erosion along the banks of the Meghna River and Rahmat Khali canal. He also highlighted a nationwide canal excavation programme to be completed within 180 days, confirming that Lakshmipur will be included in the upcoming works.
Anee arrived in his home district, Lakshmipur, on Thursday night for a three‑day visit. Earlier Friday morning, he held a meeting with officials from the district administration and the Water Development Board.
