A rickshaw driver was beaten to death with a brick during a dispute over drug consumption in the capital’s Demra area on Friday morning.
The deceased was identified as Delwar Hossain, 50. Following the incident, locals caught the alleged attacker and handed him over to police after beating him.
The incident took place behind the No 4 Gate Mosque in Kamaragop area of Demra at around dawn on Friday, 4 September.
Demra Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Shital Kumar said Delwar used to drive a battery-powered rickshaw. He had a previous acquaintance with Rony, 25, and they got into an argument over drug consumption in the Kamaragop area in the early hours.
At one stage, Rony allegedly attacked Delwar with a brick, hitting his head and other parts of his body. Delwar died at the scene.
Local residents later caught Rony and gave him a mass beating. Police rescued him and took him into custody before admitting him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment. His condition was reported to be critical.
The SI said Delwar’s body was sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
Police are investigating the incident further, he added.
