The High Court on Sunday granted bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson for Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote, in two more cases filed in Chattogram.
A bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the orders.
Former ISKCON leader Chinmoy‘s lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee said the cases were filed with Kotwali Police Station on 26 November 2024, on charges of obstructing police in the discharge of their duties and vandalism.
The High Court had earlier issued a rule asking why Chinmoy should not be granted bail in the cases.
After hearing the rule, the court made it absolute and granted him bail.
However, he will remain in custody as he is facing several other cases.
Earlier, on 2 August, the same bench granted him bail in two other cases filed over allegations of vandalism.
Sedition case
On 31 October 2024, Firoz Khan, general secretary of the BNP’s Chandgaon-Mohra ward unit in Chattogram city, filed a sedition case with Kotwali Police Station against Chinmoy and 18 others.
Chinmoy, along with several others, was arrested on 25 November that year in connection with the case.
After a court rejected his bail petition in the sedition case, tension escalated at the Chattogram court premises on 26 November 2024, when his followers protested.
Lawyer Saiful Islam was beaten and hacked to death during the ensuing clash.
Saiful’s father later filed a murder case over the killing, naming Chinmoy as one of the accused. Chinmoy is also facing several other cases.
