Dhaka court on Monday ordered Regent Hospital Chairman Mohammad Shahed to be shown arrested in two loan default cases filed by NRB Bank.
Judge Md Mosharraf Hossain of Dhaka’s Artha Rin Adalat No 4 passed the order after Shahed failed to deposit 25 per cent of the outstanding loan amounts, as required for securing bail.
According to the case documents, Shahed defaulted on two loans of Tk5,55,000 and Tk1,51,81,000 taken from NRB Bank.
His lawyer Dabir Uddin said they had sought bail in the cases, but the court ordered Shahed’s arrest as he was unable to make the required deposit.
The defence will challenge the order before a higher court, he added.
Shahed was recently arrested from the capital’s ECB Chattar by Cantonment police on the basis of an outstanding arrest warrant. He was later handed over to Pallabi Police Station.
He had previously faced 35 cases involving allegations of fraud, forgery and acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income. After securing bail in those cases, he was released from prison on 4 September 2024 following nearly four years of imprisonment.
Shahed came under the spotlight during the Covid-19 pandemic after the Rapid Action Battalion raided Regent Hospital on 7 July 2020 and allegedly recovered forged Covid-19 test reports.
A case was subsequently filed against Shahed and 17 others over the alleged issuance of fake certificates.
