Regent Group owner Mohammad Shahed Karim has been arrested in connection with a case filed at Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka.
Cantonment police arrested Sahed, chairman of Regent Hospital Limited, from the ECB Chattar area on Monday, said Pallabi Police Station Officer‑in‑charge (OC) Md Hasan Basir.
Basir said, “Acting on a warrant issued in a Pallabi case, police arrested Shahed from the ECB Chattar area. However, he claims to have already secured bail from the court against the warrant. His documents will be verified before a decision is made.”
Shahed has faced a total of 96 cases, including charges of illegal wealth accumulation, corruption, and Covid‑19 certificate fraud. He has already been convicted in five of those cases.
In 2020, after allegations of fraud involving hospital patients during the Covid‑19 pandemic, Shahed went into hiding to evade arrest. On 15 July that year, he was captured by RAB in Satkhira. Later, on 5 November, the Anti‑Corruption Commission (ACC) issued a notice demanding his wealth statement.
On 21 August 2023, a court sentenced Shahed to three years in prison in an ACC case over illegal wealth accumulation.
During the political unrest following the July 2024 mass uprising, Shahed secured bail in all cases in which he had been convicted. On 4 September 2024, he was released from Dhaka Central Jail.
