A classic tale of a mysterious musician and a town overrun by rats is coming alive in English at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy today, as Friday Theatre School stages ‘The Pied Piper of Hamelin’.
The production will be presented at 7:30pm at the academy’s Experimental Theatre Hall. The theatre and drama education organisation has mounted the play with support from Alliance Française de Dhaka.
Written by acclaimed playwright William Glennon and directed by Bangladeshi theatre actor and director Ashish Khondker, the play follows a town struggling with a rat infestation, a mayor’s promises and a mysterious piper whose music offers an unusual solution.
The organisers said the production combines an innovative visual concept, fluent English dialogue and a distinctive directorial approach. It also aims to give young theatre practitioners hands-on experience and help them strengthen their stage skills.
Khondker said the production presents a celebrated work of world literature in a different theatrical form while creating opportunities for young theatre workers to develop their craft.
Another show was staged at the same venue on Saturday, drawing interest from theatre enthusiasts.
