The Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) is distributing around 35,000 blankets across the country to help women, children, the elderly, and homeless people cope with the ongoing winter cold and reduce health risks.
According to a press release, the initiative is being carried out through 68 Red Crescent units with support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Danish Red Cross, Qatar Red Crescent Society, Swiss Red Cross, British Red Cross, American Red Cross, and Comic Relief.
Over 500 Red Crescent Youth (RCY) volunteers are engaged in the field, identifying the most vulnerable households and delivering blankets directly to those in need.
Abdul Rob, 54, a cycle van puller from Chuadanga, said the blanket brought much-needed relief during the severe cold, as he cannot afford winter clothing amid limited work opportunities.
BDRCS Secretary General Kabir M Ashraf Alam said standing beside the country’s most vulnerable during the cold wave is a moral and humanitarian responsibility.
He also thanked national and international partners for their support.
In addition to blanket distribution, BDRCS is conducting winter health risk awareness activities in cold-prone areas. These include messages on cold-related illnesses and protection against the Nipah virus, shared through public announcements and social media.
