Officials of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) have seized 50 gold bars worth an estimated Tk11 crore from an aircraft toilet at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) following a four-hour operation.
Acting on a tip-off that a consignment of over 100 gold bars was on board, CIID officers launched an intensive search immediately after flight BG-585 from Singapore landed at the airport around 6:30pm.
During the four-hour operation, officers recovered 50 gold bars concealed inside a toilet of the aircraft. Each bar weighs 10 tolas, taking the total weight of the recovered gold to approximately 5.832 kg.
The CIID said intelligence surveillance and operational drives will remain ongoing to identify and intercept larger gold smuggling consignments and bring the ring behind the operation to justice.
