Brazil forward Raphinha returned to training on 3 July, handing coach Carlo Ancelotti a timely boost ahead of the World Cup round of 16 clash with Norway, though his place on the right wing is no longer guaranteed.
Brazil held their penultimate session before Sunday’s knockout tie in New Jersey, with Raphinha rejoining the squad after a two week recovery from the hamstring injury he suffered in the first half of the group stage win over Haiti. During the period open to the media, the Barcelona forward warmed up normally and took part in a passing drill alongside his teammates, a strong sign he will be available for selection.
His return presents Ancelotti with a genuine dilemma, after 19 year old Rayan seized his opportunity in Raphinha’s absence. Rayan came on as his replacement and has since emerged as one of the more eye catching performers in Brazil’s squad, bringing energy, stamina and aggressive pressing from the right flank.
That effort has had a tangible impact on Brazil’s campaign, with Rayan’s work directly contributing to two goals, one against Scotland and another in the dramatic stoppage time win over Japan that sealed the side’s place in the last 16.
Alongside the return of Neymar, who is also fit again, Raphinha’s recovery gives Ancelotti a more experienced option in attack for the knockout stage. But with Rayan’s performances continuing to catch the eye, the Brazil coach now faces a difficult call over his starting line up for Sunday’s tie.
