The deputy commissioner (DC) of Rangamati has issued a formal warning to Chakma Rani Yan Yan, cautioning her against “conducting false and misleading propaganda” against government and the army on international platforms.

The United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) has strongly condemned the letter, describing it as unconstitutional and a blatant interference with freedom of expression.

In the letter dated 6 April, Rangamati Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Najma Ashrafi stated that according to various intelligence reports, Yan Yan – the wife of Chakma Circle Chief Barrister Debasish Roy – has been involved in uniting members of various tribal organisations in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) to spread misinformation abroad.

The communication noted that as the political and social situation in the CHT is extremely sensitive, such activities could lead to a deterioration of the regional environment.

The DC requested Yan Yan to exercise caution regarding any future statements or activities, urging her to strictly follow the existing laws and regulations of the country.

Reacting to the development, UPDF spokesperson Angya Marma issued a statement on Sunday (26 April) condemning the warning.

He alleged that the “disrespectful” letter was intended to exert psychological pressure to silence the Rani and prevent the international community from learning about ongoing human rights violations in the CHT.

The UPDF spokesperson challenged the authorities to disclose which specific reports Yan Yan had shared that were deemed “false and misleading,” and called for a neutral international investigation to uncover the truth of the incidents.

He further maintained that it is not only Rani Yan Yan’s right but also her moral and civic duty to speak out against human rights violations occurring in the CHT and across the country.
