Greta Gerwig’s trailer for Netflix’s The Magician’s Nephew has split fans, with some hailing it as the best in years and others calling it a disastrous fever dream.
The psychedelic, glam-rock visuals, set to Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven, have drawn comparisons to Marvel films, Barbie and Thor: Love and Thunder.
Critics say the effects overwhelm the beloved fantasy’s identity, while some question its portrayal of the characters.
Others praise its spectacle and apparent faithfulness to CS Lewis’s book, despite its unconventional rock-opera style.
According to Hollywood Reporter, Gerwig’s adaptation had already faced conservative criticism over her involvement and Meryl Streep’s casting as Aslan, the Christ-like lion.
The cast includes David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Daniel Craig, Streep, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough and Susan Wokoma.
