The Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) has temporarily suspended its Cumilla city convener, Ghulam Mohammad Samdani, over suspected involvement in the vandalism of a vehicle outside the Cumilla city office of Jamaat-e-Islami.

The party’s central committee has also served a show-cause notice on Samdani, asking why he should not be permanently expelled.

The decision was announced in a statement signed by the party’s central office secretary, Advocate Abdullah Al Mamun Rana, on Thursday evening.

Although the statement did not specify the reasons for the suspension, party sources said the action was linked to allegations that Samdani had become involved in an internal dispute within the Cumilla city unit of Jamaat-e-Islami.

The incident took place around 7pm on Wednesday, when several young men entered the Jamaat office at a time when a meeting was underway and created a disturbance.
As they left, a black microbus parked in front of the office was vandalised.

CCTV footage showed a masked young man damaging the vehicle with a sharp weapon.

He is suspected to be Samdani, though his involvement has not been officially confirmed.

Mia Mohammad Toufiq, convener of the AB Party’s Cumilla district unit, said the party had taken note of the allegations against Samdani.

“There are several reasons for his temporary suspension. He is suspected of writing against the party on social media and of being involved in Wednesday evening’s car vandalism at the Cumilla Jamaat office. He was therefore served a notice so that the party could take a decision on the matter,” Toufiq said.
