Defence lawyer Sarwar Jahan Nippon has expressed dissatisfaction with the International Crimes Tribunal-1 verdict in the Rampura shooting case, saying he will appeal against the ruling in the Appellate Division.
“We are not satisfied with this verdict,” Nippon told journalists on Sunday after the tribunal sentenced three people, including former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, to death and one to life imprisonment in the case.
Nippon, who represented former ASI Chanchal Chandra Sarkar (sentenced to 20 years in prison), claimed that his client’s confession had been obtained through extrajudicial means.
“We repeatedly appealed to the tribunal to consider the matter, but that was not done,” he said, adding that Chanchal did not possess any weapon and was on duty at Bangladesh Television Centre headquarters in Rampura on 19 July.
Chanchal’s brother, Utpal Chandra Sarkar, echoed similar sentiments. “We did not receive justice from the tribunal. We are dissatisfied with this verdict. An appeal will be filed,” he said.
The tribunal sentenced former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former ADC of Khilgaon Zone Md Rashedul Islam, and former OC of Rampura Police Station Md Mashiur Rahman to death. Former SI Tarikul Islam Bhuiyan was sentenced to life imprisonment.
All four are currently absconding.
The case was filed over the killing of two people, including the shooting of a young man hanging from a cornice in Rampura during the 2024 July uprising.
