A Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) member was killed on Friday in Sylhet city after being stabbed by a mugger while attempting to help apprehend the suspect.
The deceased, identified as Imon Acharya, died around 1:30pm while undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The incident occurred earlier on Friday morning in the city’s Topkhana area.
Additional Superintendent of Police KM Shahidul Islam Sohag, the media officer for RAB-9, confirmed the details of the event.
According to the official, a police team from the Sylhet Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station was chasing a mugger near the west side of the station.
Imon Acharya, who was in the vicinity in plain clothes for personal reasons, witnessed the pursuit and attempted to assist in apprehending the suspect.
During the subsequent scuffle, the mugger stabbed him in the left side of his chest.
Imon was immediately rushed to Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
ASP Shahidul Islam confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody. Authorities are investigating the incident further.
