Police detained 23 leaders and activists of the Awami League, whose activities remain banned, along with members of its affiliate, the Jubo League, while they attempted to hold a flash procession in Dhanmondi and nearby areas of the capital on Friday.
The detainees include influential figures and activists from various districts and upazilas across the country, notably an Upazila Jubo League President
Jisanul Haque, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Dhanmondi Zone under Ramna Division, said the arrests were made during operations in Dhanmondi 32 and nearby areas.
“The detained include a local Jubo League president and other influential leaders who were preparing to lead a flash procession,” he said.
He added that patrols and security measures had been intensified to prevent activities by the banned organisations.
Muhammad Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi Police Station, said, “Leaders and activists of the Awami League, banned Jubo League, and Chhatra League were attempting to bring out a procession.
Their plan was to participate in an event marking Sheikh Hasina’s return to the country. The identities of those detained are being verified.”
