Sukumar Ranjan Ghosh, one of the producers of the landmark Dhallywood film ‘Keyamat Theke Keyamat’, has died. He passed away early on Monday, December 22, while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka. He was 70. Film director Gazi Mahbub confirmed the news to the media.

Released in the 1990s, Keyamat Theke Keyamat is considered a milestone in Bangladeshi cinema for introducing Salman Shah and Mousumi, who went on to become two of the industry’s biggest stars. Ghosh was a key figure behind the film under the banner of Anandamela Cinema Limited.

Beyond Keyamat Theke Keyamat, he produced several commercially successful films, including ‘Swajan’, ‘Amar Ghor Amar Behest’, ‘Lorai’, ‘Amar Sangi’ and ‘Biyer Phul’, all of which received strong audience response.

Outside the film industry, Ghosh was a former Member of Parliament from the Munshiganj-1 constituency. He also served as a director of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry and as general secretary of the Bangladesh Film Distributors Association.

In a condolence message, the Film Producers and Distributors Association described his death as an irreplaceable loss to the country’s film industry and expressed sympathy to his family.

According to family sources, Ghosh had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for nearly 18 years. He was recently placed on life support after contracting pneumonia. He was taken to hospital after his condition deteriorated at his Dhanmondi residence, where he later died.
