The government will introduce a mid-day meal programme in all primary schools across the country within one year, said Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon.
He also said school uniforms will be provided to students within the next three months.
The minister made the remarks on Thursday at a programme at the National Bangla High School in Mirpur.
He said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is giving top priority to the development of children and ensuring quality education. He added that the government is committed to building a healthy, skilled and capable generation through education, sports and cultural activities.
Milon also said students will not be kept without uniforms and that underdeveloped educational institutions will be gradually brought under development initiatives.
Prime Minister’s Adviser and spokesperson of her office Mahdi Amin also spoke at the event.
He said the future Bangladesh will be built by children. He added that the education system must be joyful, creative and value-based.
Mahdi Amin further said sports and culture will be given top priority to develop students into responsible, skilled and capable citizens, while preparing them for a self-reliant Bangladesh.
