A private car carrying a newspaper sticker was attacked and vandalised by unidentified miscreants in Nilphamari Sadar on Saturday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 3:30pm at the microbus stand in the Anandababu Bridge area of the town, where the black vehicle used by Daily Khola Kagoj was parked.
Eyewitnesses said a group of youths armed with sticks suddenly assaulted the car.
The attack shattered the front and rear windscreens and caused significant damage to the vehicle’s body before the assailants fled.
Police from Nilphamari Sadar Police Station visited the scene after being informed and spoke to local residents.
Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zillur Rahman said the identities of those involved have not yet been confirmed.
He said the spot has been inspected and efforts are under way to collect nearby closed-circuit television footage.
He added that no written complaint has been received so far and necessary legal action will be taken once a complaint is filed.
Daily Khola Kagoj Publisher and Editor Ahsan Habib Lenin confirmed that the vehicle is used for official purposes.
He said they do not know the motive behind the attack and demanded a fair investigation and punishment of those responsible.
Local journalists described the incident as alarming for the media, saying attacks on vehicles linked to newspapers threaten the environment needed for independent journalism.
They called for swift identification of the culprits and legal action against them.
