Following the passage of the ‘Yes’ vote in the referendum according to the July Charter, the upper house of the national parliament will be formed based on the ratio of votes received, not on seats won, according to Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General and spokesperson for the 11-party alliance, Hamidur Rahman Azad.
He said, “In this matter, the BNP’s note of dissent will not be effective. Because, had the people supported their note of dissent, they would have made the ‘No’ vote victorious in the referendum.”
He made this statement after a meeting of the 11-party alliance at the Jamaat office in the capital’s Mogbazar on Saturday around 8:30pm.
He said, “The 11-party alliance will play a collective role in the national parliament.”
Stating that leaders and activists are being attacked across the country, he said, “If this is not stopped immediately, we will move towards large-scale political programs. Attacks on leaders and activists are not desirable under any circumstances. We are thinking about programs regarding this matter.”
Azad further said, “We are going to the Election Commission on Sunday morning. We will seek effective action from the EC regarding irregularities and manipulation of results in various centers in more than 30 constituencies. If necessary, we will go to the High Court as a last resort.”
In response to a question from journalists, he also said, “The 11-party alliance has no responsibility for failing to protect voting rights. Rather, the Election Commission should apologise to the voters for its failure.”
