The by-election for Thakurgaon-1 constituency, vacated by President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, will be held on 29 October.
Election Commission (EC) Secretary Akhtar Ahmed announced the election schedule during a briefing at the Election Commission building on Thursday.
According to the declared schedule, the deadline for submitting nomination papers to the returning officer is 27 September.
The scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on 29 September, while the final date for the withdrawal of candidature is 7 October.
Electoral symbols will be allocated on 8 October, culminating in voting on 29 October.
The EC Secretary confirmed that the “Out of Country Voting” facility will continue. In the previous election, 386 voters residing across 33 countries registered from Thakurgaon-1 constituency, with the highest number of registrants located in Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, registrations for “In Country Postal Voting” reached 4,045, which included 2,735 government employees.
Mirza Fakhrul, the sitting lawmaker for Thakurgaon-1, was elected the president through a vote in Jatiya Sangsad on 20 August.
Following his swearing-in as president, the Parliament Secretariat officially declared the constituency vacant.
Under Article 50(4) of the Constitution, the president is ineligible to be elected as a lawmaker during their tenure; if a lawmaker is elected president, their parliamentary seat automatically becomes vacant on the day they assume office.
Additionally, Article 123(4) of the Constitution mandates that a by-election must be conducted within 90 days of a seat falling vacant.
The Election Commission declared the schedule within this stipulated timeframe.
