The Thakurgaon‑1 parliamentary seat has been declared vacant following the election of its lawmaker, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, as the 23rd President of Bangladesh.
The announcement came on Saturday in a notification signed by Md Golam Sorwar Bhuiyan, secretary of Legislation Branch‑2 under the Legislative Support Wing of the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat.
According to the notification, the constituency represented by 13th Parliament MP Mirza Fakhrul fell vacant on Friday when he officially assumed office as president under Article 50(4) of the Constitution.
A copy of the notification has been sent to the Senior Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat to initiate arrangements for a by‑election in the vacant constituency.
Further copies were forwarded to the Cabinet Secretary, the Prime Minister’s Office, the offices of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, the office of the Leader of the Opposition, and other relevant departments for information and necessary action.
