Sandhya Rani Dhar, 71, the mother of Sammilita Sanatani Jagaran Jote Spokesperson Chinmoy Krishna Das, passed away on Thursday morning.
She breathed her last at around 9:30am whilst undergoing medical treatment at Pundarik Dham in Chattogram.
According to family sources, Dhar had been suffering from cancer for a long time, alongside heart disease and various age-related physical complications. She had been enduring extreme mental anxiety ever since her son, Chinmoy, was imprisoned.
In her final days, considering Pundarik Dham a pilgrimage site, she was kept there with oxygen support and other medical facilities, where she subsequently passed away.
Meanwhile, the process of applying for parole release for her imprisoned son to enable him to attend his mother’s last rites is currently underway.
A death certificate will first be obtained from the Pundarik Dham authorities, after which a formal parole application will be submitted through legal channels.
The schedule for the last rites will be determined based on the granting of parole and the timing of his release.
Kushal Baran Chakraborty, assistant professor at the Department of Sanskrit at Chittagong University, confirmed the matter to TIMES of Bangladesh at around 11am on Thursday.
Syed Mahbubul Haque, additional district magistrate of Chattogram District Administration, said the release would be considered upon receiving a parole application.
Chinmoy was arrested on 25 November 2024 in a sedition case filed over the alleged disrespect of the national flag. On 26 November, he was produced before a Chattogram court, which ordered him sent to prison.
On the same day, violent clashes broke out between his followers and law enforcement forces on the court premises.
During the conflict, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was beaten and hacked to death on Patharghata Bandel Road, adjacent to the court.
Subsequently, the deceased lawyer’s father, Jamal Uddin, filed a murder case naming 31 individuals, in which the court later ordered Chinmoy to be shown arrested as well.
