President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman offered Eid‑ul‑Fitr prayers at the country’s main congregation at the National Eidgah on Saturday morning.
The prayers, led by Mufti Muhammad Abdul Malek, Khatib of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, began at 8:34am. A special munajat followed, seeking divine blessings for peace, prosperity, and the welfare of Bangladesh and the wider Muslim Ummah.
Cabinet members, lawmakers, senior political leaders, top civil and military officials, and thousands of devotees from across society joined the congregation. The event was organised by Dhaka South City Corporation, with separate arrangements for women worshippers.
Eid‑ul‑Fitr, one of the largest religious festivals for Muslims, is being celebrated nationwide. This year marks Tarique Rahman’s first Eid in Bangladesh in 18 years, following his long exile in London.
After the prayers, the prime minister is scheduled to exchange Eid greetings at the State Guest House Jamuna at 10am, before visiting the graves of his parents—BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman, and former prime minister Khaleda Zia—to offer fateha.
On Friday, Rahman extended Eid greetings to the nation in a video message, highlighting the festival’s spirit of unity, compassion, and joy. He urged citizens to share the happiness of Eid with one another.
Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh with his family on 25 December last year and assumed office as Prime Minister on 17 February, following his party’s landslide victory in the 13th parliamentary election held on 12 February.
