President Mohammed Shahabuddin has paid rich tribute to the memory of Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq on the occasion of his 64th death anniversary, to be observed tomorrow.
In a message issued Sunday, Shahabuddin described the “Tiger of Bengal” as an extraordinary, wise, and courageous politician who dedicated over half a century to the welfare of the masses.
Throughout his illustrious political career, Sher-e-Bangla held several high-profile positions, including Member of the Bengal Legislative Council, President of the All India Muslim League (1916–1921), and Mayor of Calcutta (1935). He served as the first Chief Minister of undivided Bengal (1937–1943), Chief Minister of East Bengal (1954), and Governor of East Bengal (1956–1958).
Shahabuddin highlighted Huq’s role as a leader of peasants and labourers, noting his founding of the Krishak Praja Party (KPP) in 1936 and the Sramik-Krishak Dal in 1953.
As Chief Minister of undivided Bengal, his contributions to education, political development, and social reform were significant. Notably, his formation of the “Debt Settlement Board” played a crucial role in liberating oppressed farmers from the cycle of debt.
Shahabuddin also noted Huq’s legislative impact, mentioning the enactment of the Bengal Employment Rules, Tenancy Act, Mahajani Act, and Shop Assistants Act, all of which positively influenced the lives of neglected farmers and labourers in the region.
Reflecting on his national importance, Shahabuddin recalled that on March 23, 1940, Huq moved the historic ‘Lahore Resolution’ at the Muslim League conference, calling for the creation of ‘independent states’ in Muslim-majority areas.
This resolution, Shahabuddin noted, contained the essence of self-identity and the vision for an independent Bangladesh.
President Shahabuddin expressed hope that current and future generations, particularly politicians, would follow the ideals and political philosophy of Sher-e-Bangla.
He urged them to contribute to building a happy, prosperous, and humane Bangladesh through the socio-economic advancement of the working class. Shahabuddin concluded by praying for the eternal peace of the departed soul of the legendary leader.
