Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam on Wednesday said many election candidates engage criminals for personal gain, enabling top-listed offenders to operate openly and take part in political rallies. This behaviour eventually fuels criminal activities and hampers law enforcement.
He made the remarks on Wednesday in a response to TIMES of Bangladesh while commenting on the overall law and order situation, following several high-profile killings in Chattogram and Dhaka.
The IGP assured that the police will remain steadfast, and there are currently no fears of sabotage. He added that when individuals aspiring to become MPs or ministers hang around with or deploy criminals, the scope of police intervention becomes limited.
Baharul said the public would judge political leaders who give shelter to criminals and reiterated that the police are performing their duties impartially, conducting regular drives to arrest offenders.
The IGP also said the police are trying to maintain neutrality while carrying out their responsibilities.
