Police have applied for a fresh seven-day remand for Afzal Naser Bhuiyan, former director of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and executive director (Admin) of United Group, in a case involving alleged financing of violence during the anti-discrimination student movement.
The application was filed on Wednesday with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Dhaka by the case’s investigating officer. The development was confirmed by Additional Public Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon.
According to case-related sources, Afzal Naser Bhuiyan has already been questioned in two phases-first under a four-day remand and then under a two-day remand.
Investigators say that key aspects of the case remain unresolved, and further interrogation is necessary to advance the investigation.
In its remand application, police stated that preliminary evidence indicates Afzal Naser’s involvement in financing acts of violence, shootings, and killings during the student movement.
He is also accused of directing and supporting armed attacks on protesters. Investigators are working to identify other suspects, trace the sources and flow of funds, and determine the main planners behind the incidents.
Earlier, on 27 April, Afzal Naser Bhuiyan was produced before the court following the completion of a four-day remand.
At that time, Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain granted a second remand of two days.
Prior to that, on 23 April, the court had approved an initial four-day remand.
According to the case documents, the incident dates back to 5 August, 2024, when a procession during the anti-discrimination student movement came under attack and gunfire in Azampur area under Uttara East Police Station in Dhaka.
A youth named Mahmoudul Hasan, 26, was shot and later declared dead at Bangladesh Kuwait Maitree Government Hospital.
A murder case was filed on 26 September with Uttara East Police Station in connection with the incident.
Police said Afzal Naser Bhuiyan was arrested on 30 March from a residence in Mirpur DOHS by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Since his arrest, he has been interrogated in phases as part of the ongoing investigation.
The hearing on the latest remand petition is expected to take place Wednesday afternoon at the CMM Court.
Prosecutors told the court that further intensive questioning is necessary to ensure a thorough investigation and the interests of justice.
