Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has pledged government support to revitalise Bangladesh’s struggling garment sector, focusing on both the revival of closed factories and the protection of those still operational.
During a meeting with the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Monday, Rahman assured that the government would allocate necessary policy support for factories affected by economic challenges.
He affirmed that the government would treat the reopening of closed factories and the preservation of struggling ones with equal priority, helping safeguard millions of jobs in the process.
BGMEA President Mahmud Hassan Khan Babu, who led the delegation, welcomed the Prime Minister’s commitment and emphasised the need for transparency in managing the special fund aimed at supporting closed factories.
Khan called for strict oversight to ensure the funds are used appropriately and not misallocated.
The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of diversifying the country’s exports, specifically encouraging an increased use of man-made fibres (MMF) to produce higher-value garments.
By adopting such measures, Rahman said, Bangladesh could boost its competitiveness in global markets, especially in the high-end garment sector.
BGMEA leaders, including senior vice presidents and other key figures, expressed their gratitude for the government’s continued support, which they believe is crucial for the future of Bangladesh’s garment industry.
The meeting comes at a time when the garment sector, the backbone of Bangladesh’s economy, is under pressure due to both global market conditions and domestic economic challenges.
With Rahman’s pledge, the government aims to help restore stability to this vital industry, ensuring its long-term contribution to economic growth.
