A Bailey bridge collapsed into a canal in Debipur after a truck crossed it, disrupting road communication between Pirojpur and Mathbaria upazila. The bridge is located on the Pirojpur–Mathbaria–Patharghata–Barguna road.
Pirojpur Roads and Highways Department Executive Engineer Md Rasel confirmed the matter.
The collapse caused extreme suffering to thousands of commuters and left hundreds of vehicles stranded.
According to sources, the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when a truck, carrying an excessive load of raw materials belonging to a businessman named Zakir Hossain, got onto the bridge, causing it to cave in.
Since the accident, all types of vehicular movement on the road have remained suspended, resulting in long tailbacks on both sides of the bridge.
Rasel said, “We have contacted the higher authorities regarding the bridge collapse incident.”
He added that efforts are underway to salvage the truck and restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible.
