United Nations Resident Coordinator in Dhaka Gwyn Lewis has said the period before the February elections is a crucial time for Bangladesh.
He made the remark on Sunday while meeting with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at the BNP Chairperson’s office in the city on Sunday.
Alongside Gwyn Lewis, Senior Human Rights Advisor Huma Khan from the UN Resident Coordinator’s office in Dhaka was also present.
Following the meeting, BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury spoke with the media. He stated, “A lengthy discussion was held on the current situation in the country, elections, and the democratic future.”
He added, “The conversation also covered the United Nations’ commitment to restore democratic rule. We discussed how the upcoming February elections could be conducted fairly and the UN’s ongoing support for the repatriation of Rohingyas.
“Until their return to Myanmar, the UN has expressed its continued assistance in this matter.”
He further noted, “There was also a discussion on how to restore democratic governance through elections.”
Gwyn Lewis remarked that the United Nations is making every effort to support the Election Commission and ensure that all technical aspects are in order.
Regarding consensus, he mentioned, “Political parties have been working towards building a consensus. Everyone is eagerly waiting to move the process forward.” He also commended Bangladesh for its incredible hospitality towards refugees.
Present at the meeting on behalf of BNP were Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir, and BNP Organising Secretary Shama Obaid.
