A condolence motion adopted in parliament for individuals accused of war crimes during the 1971 Liberation War has been rejected by the people, the Jatiya Mukti Council said on Sunday.

In a statement, Faizul Hakim, central coordinator of the organisation, strongly condemned and protested the inclusion of Jamaat-e-Islami leaders’ names in the condolence motion during the first session of the 13th national parliament.

He described the leaders as those who opposed the Liberation War and were accomplices to the genocide committed by the fascist Pakistan army.

“The people reject the condolence motion adopted in parliament for the war criminals of ’71,” Hakim said.

He noted that questions were raised during the tenure of the fascist Sheikh Hasina government about interference in the judicial process of Jamaat-e-Islami leaders accused of war crimes in the International Crimes Tribunal.

While acknowledging everyone’s right to a fair trial, the statement emphasised that “the crimes of the accused do not become statute-barred.”

Hakim said the people consciously sacrificed their lives in the July mass uprising with the goal of establishing a Bangladesh of justice and fairness.

“By adopting a condolence motion for the war criminals of ’71, the national parliament has taken a position against the people’s aspiration for justice,” he said, demanding immediate withdrawal of the motion.

The statement was released by Mitu Sarkar on behalf of the organisation.
