The planned Finalissima showdown between Spain national football team and Argentina national football team has been cancelled after organisers failed to agree on an alternative venue and date, UEFA confirmed on Sunday.
The match, which was scheduled for 27 March 2026 in Qatar, would have seen the winners of UEFA Euro 2024 face the champions of the Copa América in the intercontinental showpiece known as the Finalissima.
UEFA said the fixture had to be moved due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East affecting the region. However, attempts to find an alternative arrangement ultimately failed after discussions with the Argentine Football Association.
“It is a source of great disappointment to UEFA and the organisers that circumstances and timing have denied the teams the opportunity to compete for this prestigious prize in Qatar,” the governing body said in a statement.
UEFA explored several alternative solutions after the Qatar plan became unworkable. One proposal involved staging the match at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, but the idea was rejected by Argentina.
A second suggestion was a two-legged format, with the first match in the Spanish capital on 27 March and the return leg in Buenos Aires before the next editions of the European Championship and Copa América in 2028. That proposal was also turned down.
Organisers later suggested a single match at another neutral European venue on either 27 or 30 March. However, Argentina indicated they would only be available on 31 March, which made it impossible to finalise the fixture.
“As a result, and to UEFA’s regret, this edition of the Finalissima has been cancelled,” the statement added.
The Finalissima brings together the reigning champions of Europe and South America. The inaugural edition took place in 2022, when Argentina defeated Italy national football team at Wembley Stadium in London.
That match also formed part of a memorable year for Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who later lifted the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
The proposed clash with Spain had generated additional intrigue as it could have produced a rare meeting between Messi and emerging Barcelona star Lamine Yamal, widely regarded as one of the brightest young talents in world football.
With no agreement reached over scheduling or location, the highly anticipated encounter between the continental champions will now not take place.
