A convoy of National Citizens Party (NCP) was attacked in Sylhet on Friday night while returning from a ‘July Procession’ event in Jaintapur. The party’s Chief Coordinator, Nasiruddin Patwary, and one other individual were injured in the incident.
The information was confirmed via the verified Facebook page of NCP Convener Nahid Islam on Friday night.
According to reports, a group of miscreants targeted the motorcade as leaders and activists were heading back from the programme. Patwary and a companion sustained injuries to their hands from broken glass after a vehicle’s window was shattered during the assault.
This incident follows a previous attack on NCP leaders and activists in Habiganj on Tuesday afternoon, which occurred after another ‘July Procession’. The NCP has held the ruling BNP and Chhatra Dal responsible for that attack.
The situation in Habiganj has led to significant legal action. Following a second round of clashes during an NCP protest march on Tuesday evening, Tanmoy Taher, the convener of Habiganj district Chhatra Shakti, filed a case on Wednesday night.
The case names 111 individuals, with district Chhatra Dal President Shah Rajib Ahmed cited as the principal accused.
In a retaliatory move on Thursday night (30 July), a counter-case was lodged at Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station by Iqbal Hossain (Rukon), joint general secretary of district Chhatra Dal.
This case names 10 specific individuals – including NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary and Northern Region Chief Organiser Sarjis Alam – along with 40 unidentified persons. The charges include attempted murder, assault, vandalism, and mugging.
