Workers and employees of the Olympic Cement and Fibre factory in Barishal staged a “hunger procession” on Tuesday, demanding immediate payment of outstanding wages and other legal dues.
The protest, organised by the Olympic Cement and Fibre Factory Workers-Employees Union, began around 10am from the city’s Rupatali area.
During the march, the workers carried plates, utensils and placards, symbolising their hardship and financial distress. The procession later turned into a road blockade near the Rupatali bus terminal, bringing vehicular movement in the area to a temporary halt.
The protesting workers said the factory management had abruptly issued a closure notice without providing any clear information on the settlement of their dues.
They demanded payment of two months’ arrears, unpaid overtime and other service benefits.
According to the workers, the sudden shutdown has left more than 300 employees in uncertainty over their jobs and financial entitlements.
