The United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen visited the traditional Baneswar mango market in Puthia upazila, Rajshahi on Tuesday morning to experience the district’s world-renowned fruit firsthand.

Known as “mango capital” of Bangladesh, Rajshahi holds an international reputation for its delicious, juicy, and aromatic varieties. During his visit to one of the largest mango hubs in the northern region, Christensen toured various warehouses, shops, and collection centres.

He was accompanied by Political Counsellor Eric Gillan, Political Officer Charles Besnard, and other senior officials from the US Embassy.

Christensen interacted with local farmers and traders, enquiring about the production, preservation, marketing, and export processes of different mango varieties. During the visit, he also tasted several popular local varieties of fruit.

Speaking to journalists after the tour, Christensen expressed his delight at being in the region during the harvest season. “This is my first trip to Rajshahi as ambassador, though I visited once in 2020,” he said.

“I specifically came during the mango season because I wanted to taste Rajshahi’s mangoes. I am truly delighted to be here”.

Christensen, who hails from an agricultural state in the US, noted his long-standing interest in crop production and market systems. He remarked that nothing compares to the experience of seeing and tasting produce where it is grown, as it offers the best opportunity to witness the freshest and most diverse products.

Regarding the potential for Bangladeshi mangoes in the US market, Christensen noted that while Americans love the fruit, it is mostly available there in frozen form for use in drinks and shakes.

“America loves mangoes, but it is difficult to find them as fresh as those in Rajshahi. The taste and freshness here are truly unique,” he added.

To further enhance export prospects, the ambassador emphasised the necessity of developing a modern “cold chain” – an integrated system of refrigerated storage and transport.

He suggested that such infrastructure is essential to keep mangoes available year-round and to increase the export of frozen mangoes, thereby expanding opportunities for Bangladesh’s mango industry.

According to agricultural experts, while mango production in the country has increased significantly, a large volume of the fruit is wasted due to inadequate preservation and modern supply chain facilities.

The establishment of advanced cold storage, processing industries, and international-standard packaging could help Rajshahi mangoes secure a stronger position in the global market.

Currently, Rajshahi mangoes are exported to various destinations, including Europe, the Middle East, and Canada, though the volume remains limited compared to total production.

Local traders and farmers view the ambassador’s visit as a significant recognition of the fruit’s international quality. They believe such diplomatic interest will serve as a positive signal to international buyers and help brand Rajshahi mangoes as a safe and premium product on the world stage.
