The New School Dhaka organised an awareness programme on cervical and breast cancer with participation from students, parents and teachers on Sunday.
The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the causes, prevention and early detection of two of the most common cancers affecting women, according to a press release.
The programme began with an awareness rally from 10am to 10:30am in Banani, Dhaka. Participants carried banners highlighting the importance of cancer prevention, HPV vaccination and regular screening. The rally also emphasised breaking social taboos surrounding women’s health.
An interactive discussion session was later held at the school auditorium from 10:30am to 11:30am. The session was led by the chief guest, Dr Hasina Akhter, FCPS, MRCOG (UK), EBCOG (EU), Assistant Professor at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Using a multimedia presentation, Dr Akhter explained cervical and breast cancer in a clear and accessible manner. She said cervical cancer is largely preventable through HPV vaccination and early screening, noting that delayed diagnosis leads to many preventable deaths in Bangladesh.
She also discussed risk factors associated with breast cancer and advised women to begin regular self-examination from the age of 20 and to undergo annual screening after the age of 40.
Participants actively engaged in the session, raising questions related to prevention and screening. The programme concluded with a call to families to spread awareness and prioritise women’s health.
The school authorities thanked the chief guest and said such initiatives play a vital role in building a healthier and more informed society.
