US President Donald Trump has declared a substantial hike in taxes on products imported from South Korea, raising the rate to 25 percent.
He justified this 10 percent increase from the earlier 15 percent level by claiming that Seoul has failed to honor the terms of a prior trade arrangement, reports BBC.
This tax hike encompasses a wide variety of sectors, specifically targeting items such as medications, timber, and vehicles.
The American president asserted that while the United States moved quickly to lower its tariffs as part of the deal, the legislative process in South Korea has been unacceptably sluggish.
In response, South Korean leaders indicated they were not formally warned about this change and are now pursuing immediate discussions with the White House.
Kim Jung-kwan, the Industry Minister for South Korea, plans to travel from Canada to Washington to consult with Howard Lutnick, the US Commerce Secretary.
According to the agreement established last October, South Korea committed to spending 350 billion dollars within the United States, with a portion of those funds dedicated to the shipbuilding industry.
The US side had agreed to diminish trade barriers once the South Korean government began the formal ratification process. Although the National Assembly received the proposal in late November, it remains under consideration and is expected to be approved this coming February.
The financial markets reacted to the news with South Korea’s Kospi index initially dropping before rebounding to finish the day up by 1.8 percent as exporting firms recovered.
This incident reflects a broader pattern where the Trump administration utilizes import taxes as a tool for diplomatic pressure during its second term. Similar tactics were seen when Canada was threatened with a total tariff over potential Chinese trade ties, and when the United Kingdom and other nations faced potential levies during disputes regarding Greenland.
