Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur on Saturday said his party will not join any alliance in exchange for “two or four seats,” insisting that any coalition must be based on fair and respectable negotiations.
Speaking at a public rally at Nabinagar Pilot Government High School field in Nabinagar upazila, he said, “During Awami League’s rule, Sheikh Hasina offered seats and money. But we did not compromise with fascism. We will not form an alliance with anyone for a few seats. If we form an alliance for the country, it will be under fair terms.”
The rally was organised to introduce the party’s candidate for the Brahmanbaria-5 (Nabinagar) seat, where Nur declared district vice-president Nazrul Islam the party’s sole contender.
Nur said the interim government is preparing to hold the national election in February and that the Election Commission is completing its activities, with the schedule expected to be announced on 11 December.
He added that if any situation arises due to the critical illness of BNP’s former prime minister Khaleda Zia, the EC and the government may consider adjustments; otherwise, the election will proceed in February.
He said Gono Odhikar Parishad will field candidates in all 300 constituencies, whether the election is held in February or April. If the party joins a coalition for national interest, it will only be in constituencies where it commands public support.
Nur accused some political leaders of attempting to re-establish misrule across the country through intimidation and dominance “like old fascists.”
He warned that those who defy public sentiment will face consequences, saying, “Sixteen years of misrule collapsed in an instant. Leaders fled across the borders due to public outrage.”
He urged all political parties involved in the mass uprising to remain restrained and tolerant.
The event was presided over by Nabinagar Upazila Gono Odhikar Parishad President Mehedi Hasan. Speakers included former Dhaka University Chhatra Odhikar Parishad convener Sanaullah Haque, Brahmanbaria district president Ashraful Hasan Topu, Nabinagar upazila general secretary Mozammel Haque and others.
