For the 13th National Parliamentary Election, the Dhaka District Administration has cancelled the candidacy of 12 out of 44 individuals who submitted nomination papers in five constituencies of Dhaka district. Among these, 30 have been validly accepted. The nomination of one candidate remains suspended due to signature complexities. The other one has been withdrawn.
Dhaka District Returning Officer Rezaul Karim gave this information to journalists at a briefing on Saturday.
It has been informed that the nominations of a total of 12 candidates have been cancelled due to various complexities, including 2 candidates from Dhaka-1 constituency, 1 from Dhaka-2, 8 from Dhaka-3, and 1 from Dhaka-19. Among Dhaka’s five constituencies, only in Dhaka-20 constituency was no nomination withdrawn.
District Returning Officer Rezaul Karim informed that the candidates whose nominations have been cancelled can appeal to the Election Commission (EC) from 5 to 9 January.
Among the party-based candidates whose nominations were cancelled are Jamaat-e-Islami’s candidate Colonel (Retd) Abdul Haq from Dhaka-2 and Islami Andolan’s candidate Nurul Islam from Dhaka-1, whose candidacy has been cancelled by the district administration. Out of the 12 cancelled, 9 are independent candidates.
Furthermore, in Dhaka-1 constituency, 2 out of 7 have been cancelled. Those whose nominations have been accepted are BNP’s Khondakar Abu Ashfaq, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Md Nazrul Islam, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish’s Farhad Hossain, Jatiya Party’s Md Nasir Uddin Mollah, and Bangladesh Labour Party, Sheikh Mohammad Ali.
In Dhaka-2 constituency, three persons submitted nomination papers. Apart from Abdul Haq, the other two are BNP’s Amanullah Aman and Islami Andolan Bangladesh’s Zahirul Islam. The nomination papers of these two have been declared valid.
And in Dhaka-3 constituency, out of a total of 16, the Dhaka district returning officer’s office has declared the nominations of 8 candidates, including BNP-nominated Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Jamaat-e-Islami-nominated Md Shahinur Islam, as valid. The nominations of the remaining 8 have been cancelled on allegations including loan default and discrepancies in 1 percent voter information.
Among the 8 cancelled from Dhaka-3, 7 are independent candidates. They are Monir Hossain, Rezaul Kabir, Mozadded Ali, Nazim Uddin, Parul Mollah, Md Belal Hossain, and Riaz Uddin Ahmed. Additionally, the candidacy of independent candidate Md Harunur Rashid from Dhaka-19 constituency and the same constituency’s Jatiya Party candidate Md Faruk have been cancelled.
In Dhaka-19, a total of 11 candidates submitted nomination forms. Returning Officer Md Rezaul Karim has declared the nominations of 10 party-based candidates valid. And the only independent candidate, Md Harunur Rashid’s candidacy has been cancelled. The reason stated is that the verification of 10 voters from his 1 per cent voter list could not be obtained correctly, and also an affidavit was not submitted.
The 10 whose nominations are valid are BNP’s Dewan Mohammad Salauddin, Jamaat-e-Islami nominated candidate, Md Afzal Hossain, Jatiya Party’s Md Bahadur Islam, NCP’s Dilshana Parveen, Gono Odhikar’s Sheikh Shaukat Hossain, National People’s Party’s Israfeel Islam Savari, Islami Andolan Bangladesh Md Faruk Khan, Khelafat Majlish’s AKM Enamul Haque, Bangladesh Muslim League’s Md Kamrul, and NDP’s Chowdhury Hasan Sarwar.
Only in Dhaka-20 constituency, the district returning officer has declared the nominations of all candidates valid. Among them are BNP’s candidate Md Tamiz Uddin, Jatiya Party’s Ahsan Khan, NCP’s Nabila Tasnim, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Md Abdur Rauf, Khelafat Majlish’s Ashraf Ali, and Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal’s Md Arju Mia.
