The nomination papers of Anisul Islam Mahmud, chairman of a breakaway faction of the Jatiya Party, have been canceled for the Chattogram-5 (Hathazari) parliamentary constituency.

The decision was taken by the Returning Officer and Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Md Ziauddin during the scrutiny of nomination papers.

In the same constituency, the candidacy of independent aspirant and BNP Party leader Shakila Farazana was also cancelled.

Earlier, leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal, along with other affiliated organisations in Hathazari, obstructed Anisul Islam Mahmud’s proposer Salahuddin Khorshed.

Regarding the matter, returning officer Md Ziauddin said that no one had lodged any complaint with him. He said that on Friday night he had already instructed the officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station to take all necessary measures.

BNP leader Salahuddin Ali said the issue of protest was entirely separate. He said Anisul Islam Mahmud failed to bring his own proposer and supporter, which is why the returning officer cancelled his nomination.

Speaking about the obstruction of the proposer, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station Aftab Uddin said leaders and activists of a party were protesting against a person named Salahuddin Khorshed. They were raising issues about various cases against him, which were being verified.

However, after the submission of nomination papers ended, Anisul Islam Mahmud’s Jatiya Party had announced that it would not contest the upcoming election.
