Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam Bulbul has convened an emergency meeting following the unexpected release of star pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad ahead of IPL 2026.
Mustafizur, 30, was set to make his debut for KKR after being bought for INR 9.20 crore in the mini-auction, making him the most expensive Bangladeshi player in IPL history. However, he was dropped by the franchise following directives from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), citing security concerns. Reports suggest that hardline groups in India had been pressuring the BCCI to remove Mustafizur, raising questions over political interference in sport.
Speaking to the media in Sylhet after BCB’s regional activity launch, Bulbul emphasised that the board has not received any formal communication from the BCCI regarding Mustafizur’s release. “At this moment, the information we have is that our counterpart is the BCCI. Mustafizur was scheduled to participate in franchise cricket under ICC-sanctioned events. We have not received any official statement or documentation. Once we do, we will communicate the details,” he said.
When asked whether the move amounted to a disrespect towards Bangladesh, Bulbul said, “I am unable to answer that at the moment. I will consult with our cricket operations head.” He also noted questions about the safety of the Bangladesh team for the upcoming World Cup in India but refrained from giving detailed comments. “The ICC is organising the tournament, India is the host. If communication is needed, we will do so through the ICC,” he added.
Seated beside the BCB president was media committee chief Amzad Hossain, who confirmed that the ICC would determine which venues are suitable and stressed that the board’s priority is the safety and dignity of Bangladeshi players. “We move away from the idea of being belittled. This is a first-time experience. Until we receive formal information, no action can be taken. The safety and status of our players will always remain our top priority,” he said.
Kolkata Knight Riders stated that the decision followed BCCI instructions and internal consultation, and the franchise is authorised to recruit a replacement player under IPL regulations. The situation has sparked broader concerns about the impact of political pressure on Bangladeshi players participating in foreign leagues, as well as the potential implications for cricketing relations between Bangladesh and India.
The emergency meeting called by Bulbul is expected to discuss the board’s next steps and the wider ramifications for Bangladeshi cricketers abroad.
