Fisheries and Livestock and Agriculture Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid on Thursday said there will be no shortage of sacrificial animals ahead of Eid-ul-Adha as local farmers are now fully capable of meeting the country’s entire demand.
Bangladesh has achieved self-sufficiency in meat production through modern and technology-driven farm management, he said.
The minister made the remarks while speaking to journalists after inaugurating a fingerling release programme in the lakes of Jahangirnagar University.
Local farmers are now producing enough sacrificial animals, eliminating the need for livestock imports from abroad, said Fisheries and Livestock and Agriculture Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid.
According to him, around one crore cows, buffaloes, goats and sheep are sacrificed every year during Eid-ul-Adha and the entire demand is being met through local production.
Addressing concerns over the illegal entry of cattle through borders, the minister said the government has maintained a strict position to prevent smuggling.
Several rounds of discussions have already been held with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) regarding the matter, he added.
Dhaka-19 constituency Member of Parliament Dewan Md Salahuddin Babu, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Delwar Hossain and Jahangirnagar University Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan attended the programme.
