Labour and employment minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury on Wednesday warned that negligence in government duties will not be tolerated and urged officials to perform their responsibilities with sincerity.
He made the remarks while addressing an exchange meeting with officials and employees of various departments under the Ministry of Labour and Employment at the Labour Bhaban in Dhaka.
The minister said Bangladesh is a country of workers and labourers but many public services are still delivered through outdated paper-based systems instead of modern online platforms.
“It is unfortunate that we are still relying on old paper-based processes instead of online systems to provide government services,” said Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury.
He directed officials to quickly prepare a complete list of beneficiaries of the country’s 32 labour welfare centres to improve service delivery.
The minister also reviewed the progress of ongoing development activities under the Department of Labour, including the IT sector, and stressed the need to enhance technological capacity.
Issuing a strong warning, he said negligence in government work would not be tolerated and that every official must carry out assigned duties with vigilance and commitment.
He also called on officials to ensure accountability at every level so that workers can receive services without harassment.
Speaking at the meeting, Ministry of Labour and Employment Secretary Md Abdur Rahman Tarafdar said child labour is a serious crime and urged all concerned to work together to prevent it.
He also instructed labour inspectors to strengthen efforts to ensure the financial and social security of workers.
Department of Labour Director General Fahmida Akter, Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments Inspector General Omar Md Imrul Mohsin, Bangladesh Workers Welfare Foundation Director General Md Munir Hossain Khan and officials from various departments under the ministry attended the meeting.
