Police have arrested four men along with firearms and ammunition in connection with the shooting of a narcotics inspector during an anti-drug operation in the capital’s Wari area.
The detainees were identified as Syed Jisan Ahmed, 29; Syed Hasibul Hasan alias Piyas, 22; Omar Faruk Sayem, 21; and Solaiman Hossain Chowdhury, 25.
Police recovered two pistols, a revolver, two magazines, 23 rounds of live ammunition, five spent bullet casings and a motorcycle from their possession.
According to police, the incident occurred around 12:05pm near the Syedabad Railgate area under Dhaka South City Corporation. A team from the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) was conducting a drive against illegal drugs when three to four assailants opened fire on the officers.
Inspector Siddikur Rahman of the Department of Narcotics Control was shot in the leg in Swamibagh on Monday afternoon.
The attackers fled immediately after the shooting. A case was filed with Wari Police Station following the incident.
Police said they rushed to the scene upon receiving information and pursued the suspects along their escape route. During the chase, one firearm was abandoned. A revolver loaded with four rounds and five spent bullet casings were recovered at the scene.
Based on intelligence inputs, Wari police conducted raids in several areas on Tuesday, leading to the arrest of three suspects. A pistol believed to have been used in the attack, along with two magazines and 16 rounds of ammunition, was seized from them.
Following their statements, police launched another drive and arrested the fourth suspect, recovering an additional pistol and three rounds of ammunition.
Two cases have been filed over the incident, with another case in the process of being lodged.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police said the arrested men had admitted their involvement during preliminary interrogation. Legal proceedings are underway.
