No major top criminals like before: DMP commissioner

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Acting Commissioner Md Sarwar has said the list of top criminals in the capital is being updated regularly to curb crime.

He added that DMP and intelligence agencies are working in coordination to control crime in the Karwan Bazar area.

He made the remarks while speaking at the inauguration of a new police camp at Karwan Bazar in Dhaka.

He said that although there are no major top criminals like before, their associates and individuals attempting to expand influence are under surveillance. Action will be taken before criminals can resurface, he added.

The DMP acting commissioner said special drives against extortion and drugs are ongoing in the capital, and several people have already been arrested. Surveillance has been intensified and regular operations are being conducted, he said.

Addressing allegations of police refusing to file cases, he said victims can contact the respective zonal Assistant Commissioner (AC), Deputy Commissioner (DC), or senior DMP officials if any police station declines to register a case.

Complaints against police will be investigated with importance, he added. He further said the camp has been set up to arrest criminals and bring crime down to zero in the Karwan Bazar area.

Operations against extortion and other crimes will be strengthened across the capital, he added.

The new police camp is expected to play a role in tackling extortion and other crimes, with police personnel stationed there round the clock.

Immediate action will be taken based on information received, and personnel will be increased if necessary, he said.
