BNP senior leader Salahuddin Ahmed clarified on Thursday that upcoming four-day tour of the northern region by party acting chairman Tarique Rahman will not breach the election code of conduct.
He stated that the visit is meant to pay homage to the martyrs of the July mass uprising.
“Some may view this tour differently, but honoring the martyrs of the 2024 student-led uprising is both our responsibility and a national duty. Tarique Rahman had planned this visit long ago, but for various reasons, it couldn’t happen earlier,” he said.
Speaking to reporters, Salahuddin, emphasised that paying respects to the martyrs and visiting their graves aligns with the nation’s expectations.
“We honor the spirit of the mass uprising and must carry that spirit forward. That’s why he is going. From this perspective, there is no question of violating the election code of conduct,” he added.
The BNP leader urged people to not question the dignity of the 2024 student uprising but rather further honor and glorify the sacrifice of the martyrs.
“This is the people’s expectation, nation’s expectation and it should be seen from that perspective,” Salahuddin added.
Tarique Rahman is scheduled to travel by road from Dhaka to Bogura on 11 January. During the visit, he will also go to Rangpur to pay his respects at the graves of martyrs, including Abu Sayed, who was killed during the July movement.
On questions regarding internal party issues, Salahuddin stated that BNP had already taken organizational actions against those contesting the election in violation of party decisions, and efforts are being made to persuade them.
“In a large party like ours, many candidates have expectations. Some were disappointed when they did not receive nominations. To ensure seat-sharing and multi-party representation in parliament, we had to deprive some capable candidates,” he said.
As a result, there is disappointment among those who were denied nominations.
“In some cases, we have taken organizational action, and in other cases, we are trying to calm them down. We hope the matter will be resolved,” he added.
Responding to a question about the killing of a Swechchhasebak Dal leader, Salahuddin said that although isolated incidents are occurring, they will not affect the election.
“All political parties are now committed to holding the 13th national parliamentary election,” he stated. “With the united efforts and sincerity of all political parties, we will cross the electoral hurdle smoothly. Although there were many demands earlier, all parties are now committed to the election.”
He noted that some parties had raised various demands and allegations regarding the election and referendum but now seemed to have reached a common position. “I believe all political parties are sincere about holding a free and fair election,” he said.
Salahuddin also said that if any party has concerns about the level playing field or other election-related issues, they should bring them to the attention of the Election Commission.
“The Election Commission and the government will address these issues properly. I believe all political parties and the people are sincere about a fair election,” he concluded.
