The newly constructed Bangladesh Embassy Complex at Hejo in Thimphu was officially opened on Tuesday, marking a significant advancement in the diplomatic ties between Bhutan and Bangladesh.
Princess Eeuphelma Choden Wangchuk of the Kingdom of Bhutan graced the occasion as the chief guest.
The event was also attracted key figures, business leaders, and senior officials from both countries, all of whom expressed optimism that the new embassy complex would serve as a catalyst to further strengthen bilateral relations, reports UNB.
Among the distinguished guests were Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of Bhutan; Justice Norbu Tshering, Chief Justice of Bhutan; Sangay Dorji, Chairperson of the National Council of Bhutan; D.N. Dhungyel, Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade; Gem Tshering, Minister of Energy and Renewable Resources; Asad Alam Siam, Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh; MA Akmall Hossain Azad, Senior Secretary of Bangladesh’s Planning Commission; and Enayetullah Khan, Editor-in-Chief of UNB.
Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam, who attended the opening, also had the privilege of meeting with Bhutan’s King.
He held discussions with the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and Foreign Secretary of Bhutan. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the talks focused on various aspects of bilateral cooperation, including the potential signing of a Free Trade Agreement and improving connectivity to boost trade.
The possibility of enhancing air connectivity between the two countries was also explored.
In addition, the progress of the Bhutanese Special Economic Zone in Kurigram, Bangladesh, was reviewed. Discussions also included the future potential of linking this zone with Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City.
Siam assured Bhutan’s leadership of Bangladesh’s full support for the King’s vision of Gelephu Mindfulness City.
Bhutan also expressed its interest in exporting hydropower to Bangladesh. Furthermore, both sides discussed increasing internet connectivity and the prospect of Bangladesh exporting skilled professionals to Bhutan.
